A Brief Overview of Hollister’s History

For individuals and families looking for a quieter area of California to call home — without comprising the availability of sunshine and wine — Hollister is a prime choice to live. This community is the largest in the San Benito County area and has a current (2022) population of about 41,800. Given its location in the Central Valley of the California wine country, the history of this community unsurprisingly started with a group of farmers and persons in agriculture. Officially established in 1872, Hollister was named in honor of Colonel W.W. Hollister by a group called the Rancho San Justo Homestead Association of Farmers. This came after Colonel Hollister rose to fame for being one of the first men to not only drive sheep across the United States and into the West but also to acquire Spanish Land Grants in this area of California. The name of the town itself came from a dispute among the group of settling farmers during the first town meeting; while “San Justo” was suggested initially, the name “Hollister” was chosen instead.

Century 21 Showcase, REALTORS® is proud to say that since those humble origins, Hollister has continuously grown in popularity. For families looking for a larger, gorgeous home with several bedrooms and bathrooms, our real estate agency is the perfect place to start your search!
